Tasikmalaya (ANTARA News) - Hundreds of houses in four hamlets of Tanjungsari village, Sukaresik subdistrict, Tasikmalaya regency, West Java, were inundated Monday after the Citanduy and Cikidang rivers overflow.
Sukaresik subdistrict chief Farid Khozin said in the location of the floods the peak of the inundation was reached at 3 a.m local time following heavy rains.
"The flooding of Sukaresik is an routine annual affair during the rainy season caused by the overflowing of the Citanduy and Cikidang," katanya.
The flood waters have even reached 1.5 meters, causing panic to the villagers.
However, the inundation did not refused to move to higher grounds, especially in Hegarsari, Bojongsoban, Mekarsari, and Cicalung, because they have become too accustomed to disaster.
The floods have inundated 195 homes, cut off roads and damaged some elementary schools and public clinics.
"The local authorities` plan to build a dike is expected to prevent further inundations," he said.(*)
